TOS Review - Maestro Classics, Swan Lake...

Spending so much time traveling, we listen to a lot of cds in the van. The Story of Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky by Maestro Classics would be a welcome change from 'the usual' story cds that we listen to when we are putting on the miles. Besides, my kids could use a bit of culture! :)

To be honest, there was a bit of ribbing by my 17 and 14 y.o. boys about listening to 'ballet music' - it's the kind of music mom loves, but the big boys, eh, not so much. But, while they probably wouldn't admit it, you could have heard a pin drop while we were listening to the cd (and not just for the first time!) - minus the road noise... The story of Swan Lake is told over/during the musical performance of Swan Lake by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. An hour in length, it was the perfect length for a short drive.

One of the things that I found most interesting, was the cute little activity book that came with the cd! The activities were linked to the story/music, and would interest varying ages. Included in the activity booklet were a biography on Tchaikovsky, an explanation of major and minor keys, and things like crossword puzzles. The cds themselves are geared towards 6 to 12 year olds, but I feel that they would interest a much broader age range - even the littlest girls listened to the story with interest (2 and 4).
Maestro Classics offers their award winning collection of musical stories on either cd ($16.95) or as an MP3 download ($9.95 - the download version includes the activities as a PDF).
